Student Status
Renewing your status as a student
Renewing your status as a student in Canada involves extending your study permit to continue your education if your current permit is nearing its expiration or if you require additional time to complete your program. This process requires you to apply for an extension before your existing permit expires to maintain legal status in Canada. If your study permit is about to expire and you need to renew your status as a student, the first step is to acquire a new letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution. This will prove that you are applying to remain a student in Canada. It is not possible to renew your status as a student if you are not enrolled in a Designated Learning Institution.
Understanding the Process
Your study permit allows you to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. It is essential to renew your study permit before it expires to maintain your legal status and continue your education without any disruptions.
When to Apply
- Apply Early: It is recommended to apply for a renewal at least 30 days before your current study permit expires. However, you can apply as early as 90 days before expiration.
- Implied Status: If you apply before your permit expires, you can stay in Canada under the same conditions until a decision is made on your renewal application.
Eligibility Requirements
To renew your study permit, you must:
- Be enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI).
- Be in good academic standing.
- Prove that you have sufficient financial support to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation.
